Incense: Its History, Uses, and Tools | Park Hyungi

Description: Learn about the history and past functions of incense, along with the tools utilized, and incense ceremonies. The functions of incense were truly limitless, it was first used to mask the scent of cremating bodies, attaching a sacred and ceremonial context to it. It was also used as perfume, medicine, to repel insects, for religious purposes, and as a measurement of time- similar to a clock. The event will be both in-person (with limited capacity) and online, with accompanying demonstrations. Cost: Free, All donations will go towards supporting the work of KAAC. Ages: All Artist Bio: Hyungi Park is a Korean American artist based in Los Angeles, CA. Park obtained her BFA in Sculpture + Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Her practice revolves around rituals and making incense, which was historically used to measure time. Park’s work strives to reach modern innovations within incense by researching the traditional and natural methods of producing incense along with its history. She has been making and researching incense for 7 years and teaches incense workshops at her space, Baboshop. Baboshop is a multi use space for studio, retail, events, and workshops, aiming to work with and hold space for creatives. Hyungi’s work has been featured in the New York Times and Architectural Digest, and has worked with MOCA, The Hammer Museum, Urban Outfitters, Nike, and Spotify. Description: Learn how to illustrate Korean foods using a variety of materials—pencil, paint, markers, crayons, whatever you have! In this one hour workshop we’ll cover mark making and how to achieve a variety of textures to capture different ingredients’ personalities. The artist will demo her methods to illustrate Korean food, specifically naengmyun and kimbap. All ages welcome. Materials List for Participants: Suggested - Bring what you have: Paper (at least 4” x 6”, watercolor paper preferred), Pencil, Water-based paint (watercolor, gouache), Cup of water, Brushes, Paper towel or rag, Colored pencils, Markers, Crayons / pastels Cost: Free. All donations will go towards supporting the work of KAAC. Ages: All ages. Children under 7 should be accompanied by an adult. Artist Bio: Carolyn Yoo is an artist, illustrator, and writer based in Brooklyn, NY. Her playful and expressive art uses a variety of mediums including paint, pencil, and yarn. Carolyn’s work explores women’s inner and domestic lives, as well as the delight and expansiveness of food and travel. Carolyn has studied at the School of Visual Arts and has worked with clients such as Girls’ Night In. She writes about nurturing a creative practice in her weekly newsletter, CYOO. Description: Learn how to make miniature books using pre-designed miniature books templates. A pdf for miniature book templates will be provided digitally prior to the workshop. Artist will demonstrate different ways of making miniature books by showing how to cut and fold. The event will include a short art studio visit of artist Koreangry that includes small sets and characters of the Koreangry comics. Materials List for Participants: Printed pdf (Color print would be preferable but black and white would also work), Scissors, Binder clips, Glue stick/ Glue, Small size cardboard, Mod Podge / Matt Mediums and brush for extra coat (Not necessary) Cost: Free. Donations are welcome and will go toward supporting KAAC's work Age: All Artist Bio: Eunsoo Jeong is a Los Angeles-based artist and the creator of Koreangry, a comic/zine series based on her daily struggles as a Korean-American.
